Au pair in Germany from Kyrgyzstan
In Kyrgyzstan the German Embassy in Bishkek has handed the intake of au pair visa applications to the external service provider TLScontact. Below is what the embassy asks for, what the fee is and how it is paid, and the German rules that apply once you live with the family.

Visa and application
- How common it is
In 2024, 1,270 au pairs came to Germany according to the Federal Government’s Migration Report, and nationals of Kyrgyzstan were among the largest groups, with the Philippines and the United States. The report notes that short stays may be under-counted, because the visa usually covers the stay.
- Where to apply
The embassy has outsourced the intake of au pair visa applications to TLScontact. Book the appointment directly with TLScontact, ideally with complete documents. If you are not a Kyrgyz national, also bring your Kyrgyz residence permit or proof of habitual residence in Kyrgyzstan for the last 6 months.

- Age and length
You must have turned 18 and not yet turned 27. The visa is for at least six and at most twelve months, and an au pair stay in Germany is possible only once.

German at level A1, shown with a recognised certificate — for example Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD, TestDaF or the DSD Sprachdiplom — not older than one year, as original with one copy.

- Visa fee
€75, paid when you apply, in cash in Kyrgyz som or by credit or debit card. Euros and other currencies are not accepted. Applicants under 18 pay half, €37.50.

- Health insurance for the visa
Health insurance to the EU standard, valid for taking up residence in Germany and for the whole Schengen area, with a minimum cover of €30,000, valid from the day of entry for the whole stay.

- Documents
A passport valid for at least 3 months after the planned trip, issued within the last 10 years, with at least two completely empty pages; the application form; two biometric colour photos; the au pair contract on the Federal Employment Agency’s template, signed, as original with one copy (a copy is accepted if an agency with the RAL quality mark arranged the placement); a CV in table form; a motivation letter; your signed confirmation that you received and understood the agency’s au pair information; and from the host family an invitation letter, the agency’s questionnaire, their registration certificate listing the children and copies of both host parents’ passports or ID cards.

- Processing time
The embassy has no influence on how long the authorities in Germany take and says to expect several weeks to months. If you want, you get your passport back on the day you apply.

What we could not verify
These figures are missing on purpose. We found no official source stating them, and an estimate on a page about rules is worse than a gap.
- The waiting time for an appointment at TLScontact. Neither the embassy nor its au pair page publishes one.
- Any exit formality on the Kyrgyz side. We found no official Kyrgyz page on leaving the country as an au pair, so the page says nothing about it.
Once you live with the family in Germany
These rules come from the destination’s rules page and are the same wherever the au pair comes from.
- Working hours
Household duties including looking after the children must as a rule not take more than six hours a day and 30 hours a week. Going beyond that needs to be agreed in advance, and the extra hours have to be compensated with time off.

- Pocket money
€280 a month, independent of the hours of housework. Board and lodging are provided free of charge, including an own room in the family’s home.

- Language course
The host family contributes at least €840 in total towards learning German. It can be paid as €70 a month over the stay or as a single payment of €840, and only to the extent the costs actually arise. Travel costs to the nearest suitable German course are paid on top.

- Length of stay
The placement must last at least six months and at most one year. A second au pair placement is not possible, even if the year was not used up.

- Insurance
Au pair placements are not subject to compulsory social insurance, but the au pair must be insured for illness, pregnancy and childbirth and against accidents. All premiums are borne by the host family.
