Au Pair Placement Agreement
A private agreement between a host family and an au pair
This is a fill-in agreement between a host family and an au pair. It has twelve numbered sections, from the term and working hours to pocket money, accommodation, duties, vehicle use and termination. Print it, fill in the blanks together and have both sides sign.
Next step: The blanks for hours, pocket money and days off depend on your host country. Look up the official figures first, then fill them in.
Au pair rules by country
Germany: what the official sheet sets for the blanks
For a placement in Germany, the Federal Employment Agency's information sheet for au pairs and host families sets these minimums. Your agreement should not fall below them.
- Section 2, hours: as a rule no more than six hours a day and 30 hours a week, including looking after the children. Going beyond that needs prior agreement, and the extra hours must be compensated with time off.
- Section 2, time off: at least 1.5 full rest days a week, at least one free Sunday a month and at least four free evenings a week.
- Section 3, pocket money: €280 a month, independent of the hours of housework. Board and lodging are free of charge.
- Section 3, holiday: four weeks of paid holiday for a full year with the family; otherwise two working days for each full month.
- Section 3, language course: the host family contributes at least €840 in total, as €70 a month or as one payment of €840, plus travel costs to the nearest suitable German course.
- Section 3, insurance: the au pair must be insured for illness, pregnancy and childbirth and against accidents, and the host family bears all premiums.
- Section 4, room: an own room in the family's home.
- Section 1, term: at least six months and at most one year.
